The JERICHO effect and scripted TV
With the news on Friday, it may be hard to look beyond the sadness and anger.
But I urge you to while fighting for more Jericho, to look beyond those feelings.
The Jericho effect has forever changed TV.
The internet, iTUNES and etc are now elements that the networks and cable networks will have to take into account at a higher level than ever before when figuring out a TV series popularity.
Jericho showed all of TV that if you have a compelling show with a unique web presence, the viewers will come.
Dan and Karim said on my radio show Friday night, that the new shows they are working on will all have a similar web presence and interactivity with the viewers, that Jericho has. I would say every new TV show will follow the Jericho model.
Returning shows like Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles, undoubtedly will ramp up its web presence and fan interactions.
Also, we must not shy away from scripted TV, either on the networks or on cable. As long as the balance between scripted and reality is still tilting towards scripted TV, the fight is still on.
Great minds are creating some terrific new shows for us to fall in love with. It is incumbant upon all of us to support scripted TV. Watch the new shows in the fall, dont be afraid to fall in love with a new show. Support your new favorites and get active on their websites and forums.
Every TV show on the air risks getting cancelled, its just the way things are with TV.
We must hang in there and support these new shows coming on in the summer and fall as well as our returning favorites.
The minute we give up on scripted tv, we and all of TV will be the losers.
I for one do not want to look at TV in 5 years and see a wasteland of reality shows.
So while the fight for Jericho rages on, lets continue to fight for good quality scripted TV. Keep your eyes out for familiar names involved with new shows and give them a chance, I know I will.
We owe it to everyone on Jericho to stay in the fight for good scripted tv series.
Thank you
